Advice on role playing games?

I just started playing this game with my friends. I forgot the name but its kind of like you create these characters and role dice to figure out if they can do stuff. So there were 3 friends I knew, my friends ex boyfriend and this guy I've never met before playing. I don't really fit in with them. They watch anime and foreign films and I watch popular movies and top chef/reality shows. I feel like two of the people (my friends ex and the guy I never met before, but in particular the ex) were talking down to me. Like when he was helping me create the character he was explaining what some words meant that I already knew and kept on when I told him I knew. Just because I'm not a geek doesn't mean I'm stupid. So how do I deal with that without quitting the game or make it awkward? And also if anyone has any advice on getting past the awkwardness and getting into character without being embarrased that would be great. Thanks!
