Is it pretty much over if the first date was awkward?

No, I doubt its over. I think that he is just a shy and awkward person and it will take multiple dates to get over it completely. As long as he knows that you had fun and you liked it he probably will try again. If you can, I would go to a movie or something that requires less talking so that there isn't so much "awkwardness". Also tell him even if he thinks something is awkward (even if you think it is too) that it isn't that awkward. That will make him feel more comfortable because he most likely is worried about messing things up. Good luck!
