How to handle the awkwardness when guys flirt with my friend(s) in front of me?

So one of my best friends and I have clear similarities between us....first of all, I'm Asian and she's Sri Lankan also she's curvy (she's not obese or anything but she does have diabetes due to her weight) while I'm on the skinnier side...we're both short however she's a few inches taller than me. We dont dress like s l u t s....she usually wears jeans and a long sleeve sweater while i usually wear short sleeve, knee-length sundresses. Okay so, we were walking together and this guy was walking and he goes up to where we are and says "Hey, how you doin babe?" in the dumbest "ganster" accent ever, he was wearing big sunglasses so i wasnt sure where he was looking to but im pre sure he was looking at my friend...so im a very protective person but all i did was walk away with her since this dude was a creep, should have i like punched him out (cuz believe me i would have) or have told him that he will only get with one of MY friends when hell freezes over or did i do the right thing even though i feel like i didn't necessarily stand up for my friend the way i wanted to?
