Could really use some advice on how to handle this Situation? Please Help?

So there is this girl that i work with during the summer when im home from college, and this summer ive really started taking a liking to her. So last week when i was out with a bunch of guys from work i asked one of my buddies about her and i said i was interested in her. So he talked to her and according to him, she was interested too, But now every time i try to talk to her there seems to be this awkwardness between us, like she doesn't want to talk to me and that "awkwardness" is what i was trying to avoid the entire time because that has happened to me before and never went any further with the girl. All i really wanted to do was ask her if she wanted to hang out so i could get to know her better because she is such a great girl and i didn't want to scare her away. But now everyone at work is asking her if she likes me and im afraid that's just scaring her away and i don't want that to happen. Should i apologize for the awkwardness and tell her that all i really wanted to do was to get to know her better and hope for the best? At this point it seemed like we were really connecting better before she knew that i liked her and i feel like ive blown my chances and embarrassed myself. Also should i do it face to face or on Facebook, because or schedules don't always match up so facebook would be easier but i feel weird saying that on that computer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated? Thank You
