Talking to friends, how do YOU know how well you get along with them? should things ever be awkward?

My measure of a friend is how much I can insult them before they get mad Example my Amigo I call him Boy, I insult the fact that he doesn't have a mom, that he looks like a homo, and just plain make fun of him(All jokingly of course) he usually laughs and we trade insults. That's how I measure a friend although sometimes I've taken it too far and he gets mad but we still end up friends in the end.
