Why is it awkward when you meet friends of your friend?

it's so awkward i cannot describe it... they introduce you and everything, but then they have similar topics to talk about, you have to stay silent... and the awkwardness gets so... umm.. awkward !! .. you feel like you don't belong anywhere.. felt that way before ?
